Finnish Lapland sees coldest January in nearly 40 years

Finnish Meteorological Institute data shows January 2026 was the coldest in northern Finland since 1987, with temperatures dipping to -42.8°C in Savukoski, Lapland. The deep freeze and low winds also pushed Finland’s spot electricity prices to a winter record as wind power output fell due to calm conditions and turbine icing.
