Unseasonably warm temperatures in southern Yukon brought snow, rain, and ice that closed sections of major highways and created hazardous travel, including a school bus sliding into a ditch near Whitehorse.
The Yukon Department of Highways has also put a travel advisory on the Alaska Highway south through Teslin and Swift River, again because of slippery conditions. There is black ice on the North Klondike Highway from Whitehorse to Deep Creek, leading to a travel advisory on that stretch of road as well.
This year’s large snowfall in southern Yukon has caused issues for highway staff and for people contracted by Highways and Public Works to deal with avalanches.
Record-breaking warm temperatures had some people in Whitehorse basking in the sun over the last few days.
Marsh Lake was the hardest hit, but power was out 'all over,' said Jay Massie, manager of ATCO Electric Yukon, 'from Teslin to Tagish, Carcross out to Deep Creek and west towards Haines Junction.'
Warm winter weather and rain in Alaska triggered avalanches and hazardous roads, with the Parks Highway being closed due to avalanche debris near Cantwell.
