Residents of Seyðisfjörður in East Iceland are returning home after devastating mudslides caused by intense rain destroyed or damaged a dozen houses and completely changed the appearance of the town and fjord. In a few days, Seyðisfjörður experienced the same amount of rain as ReykjavÃk expects in an average eight-and-a-half months. The town is considered to be the most at risk of landslides in Iceland due to the tall mountains behind the town and the large number of valleys, canyons, and overhangs. The head of the natural disaster insurance fund estimates the damage in Seyðisfjörður at around one billion krónur. The government has promised to do "all that needs to be done" to help Seyðisfjörður recover, including plans for new avalanche and mudslide protection barriers.
