The virus has been linked to birth defects, including microcephaly, and a rare neurological condition called Guillain-Barre syndrome. The Aedes aegypti mosquito breeds in stagnant water, and health officials have asked residents to regularly empty any containers filled with water and to clean other receptacles, such as pet water bowls.
