Canada’s fisheries department estimates only about 2,200 belugas remain in the Belcher Islands–Eastern Hudson Bay stock, a record low. Nunavik’s wildlife board is asking hunters to delay the fall harvest to target healthier Western Hudson Bay whales and reduce pressure on the declining stock.
