Powerful winds near Kodiak knocked down numerous Sitka spruce trees on the Near Island South End Trail, uprooting root masses and making part of the trail unsafe and impassable. Volunteers closed off hazardous sections and rerouted users while seeking a longer-term, more durable trail design.
