A cyclone brought wet snow and wind gusts up to 28 m/s to Chukotka, causing power outages, water supply disruptions, and widespread flight delays. Ferry service across the Anadyr Estuary was suspended in the morning, with plans to resume service later in the day.

On July 26, storm‐force southeast winds gusting up to 19 m/s and light rain forced a temporary shutdown of seaport operations in Anadyr, delaying cargo unloading and canceling passenger ferry crossings.

Despite rapidly freezing Arctic waters, Moscow continues to send more than 20 years old ships without ice class to the Northern Sea Route. 'They are compromising security,' a Norwegian professor in ice navigation says.

Over the past years, ice conditions in late October and early November have allowed extensive shipping along the vast Russian Arctic coast. This year, however, large parts of the remote Arctic waters were already covered by sea ice by late October.

The troublesome shipping on the Northern Sea Route continues into the new year. Almost three weeks after the world's most powerful icebreaker arrived in the Chukchi Sea, none of the four vessels stuck in the area have broken out of the ice.
