An avalanche in the backcountry near Nuuk, Greenland, killed a 17-year-old man and injured two others. A search-and-rescue operation involving Greenland Police, Arctic Command, Nuuk fire services, SAR Qamutit and a helicopter was launched.

A large search-and-rescue operation is underway in Beisfjord, Narvik after an avalanche on Tverrdalsfjellet. One person from a foreign group of three skiers is reported missing.

Norwegian police report that a snow avalanche occurred near Trollfjordvatnet in Vesterålen, with 13 people caught in the slide. A rescue helicopter evacuated an injured person, and police said they are continuing investigations.

Search and rescue teams are now shifting their focus to recovering the eight, potentially nine bodies, after rescuing six survivors Tuesday night from the avalanche site near Castle Peak.

A natural avalanche at Alyeska Resort in Girdwood, Alaska, occurred before opening on Feb. 5, 2026, prompting closure of several upper-mountain lifts but causing no injuries or damage. Resort crews conducted avalanche mitigation and planned to reassess conditions before reopening.

This is Alaska’s first fatal avalanche reported this season. It is also the country’s deadliest since February 2023.

Chugach forecasters issue warnings of high avalanche danger following a fatal incident and two non-fatal close calls in the mountains.

Michael Hamilton, who worked at Valdez Heli-Ski Guides, died Monday in one of numerous avalanches that have been occurring in the Southcentral Alaska backcountry recently. Several recent large wet slab avalanches reported throughout the Chugach are believed to be connected to a buried crust that formed around late October, she said. A warm storm system last week also weakened the snowpack because it added weight and heat.

Jeffrey Cheng, 33, died in the slide. One of his friends managed to hold on to a tree as waves of avalanche debris washed over his head. The third member of their group wasn’t caught.
