Watson Lake

A longtime resident of Watson Lake, Yukon, has contributed to the world of science — simply by taking a picture.

The government banned campfires Friday at the Watson Lake, Simpson Lake, Frances Lake and Big Creek territorial campgrounds in southeast Yukon. Fire danger ratings remain extreme or high for most of the territory.

The Government of Yukon released draft flood hazard maps for Upper Liard and is asking residents to provide feedback through a survey and an in-person open house. The maps show varying flood risk areas to support preparedness, planning, and long-term community resilience.

Canada’s Northern Contaminants Program found elevated levels of the banned pesticide DDT in five lake trout from Watson Lake, Yukon. Health officials are recommending an exposure assessment to understand how much local people may be consuming contaminated fish.
